Description

Time 2:30 minutes +/- 10 seconds Junior: 3:00 minutes +/-10 seconds
Senior: 4:00 minutes +/-10 seconds
 
Rhythm,
tempo,
character or
nature
"Rhythm Combination"
Any 2 or 3 of: Slow foxtrot (reflect ballroom character), Quickstep, and Charleston.
Tempo of the Slow Foxtrot should not exceed 32 measures of 4 beats per minute.
� Creative program with dance steps & movements.
� Expressing character of music chosen.
� Developing a story or theme is optional.
� Moves must suit character or concept.
� Must not look like pair skating.
 
Music � Vocal permitted.
� Modern orchestration of the permitted rhythms are allowed.
� Only music with a rhythmic beat, must skate to it and not to the melody alone.
� Two or three selections of music may be used.
� If only 2 rhythms are selected, one may be repeated even if it is a different tune.
Duration of each rhythm should be balanced.
� Rhythms should be listed in the order in which they will be skated when registering their music.
 
� Vocal permitted.
� Must have an audible rhythmic beat and melody, or audible rhythmic beat alone, but not melody alone.
� Couple must skate in time to the rhythmic beat and not to the melody alone.
� If classical music is chosen, it should be either transcribed for ice dance or be characteristic of dancing.
Timing

Introduction � Without beat or melody maximum 10 seconds.
 
 
Pattern � Generally constant, must not cross long axis except once at each end of rink (< 20 meters from barrier).
� Loops permitted (except on long axis).
 
� Not restricted except must utilize whole ice surface.
General steps
& movement
� All steps, turns, rotations and changes of position permitted if appropriate to each rhythm.
� Difficult, original and intricate footwork required for both skaters.
� Changes of edge, rockers, choctaws and other such steps and turns, and multi-directional skating, etc. preferred to runs and chasses, posing and one directional skating.
� Excessive skating on 2 feet considered inability to skate and should be penalized.
  • Small hops, toe steps and small jumps of no more than 1/2 rotation are permitted.
  • 1 highlight with 2 feet (max. 5 sec.).
  • Kneeling or sliding (2 knees) or touching the ice with a hand(s) are not allowed.
� All permitted.
� Deep edges, intricate footwork, variety of steps and movements, originality.
� Emphasis on quality skating with difficult dance steps and turns.
� Deep edges, rockers, choctaws etc. preferred to runs and chasses and cross cuts.
� Not concept of a pair free skating program with pair elements (excluding spirals, spins and step sequences).
  • One skate on ice at all times (except during permitted jumps or lifts).
  • No skating with a hand (or hands) on ice.
  • No lying on the ice.
Stops Max 3 full: (5 seconds each) - any choreography during (including separation of not more than 2 arms length apart), may not be in required footwork sequences.
� After the 1st movement, must not remain in one place (even if doing brief extra stops which are permitted) for longer than 10 seconds.
 
� Permitted for 5 seconds each.
� [If overused will not appear to be skating.]
Required Elements
 
Original Dance Free Dance
Unison/Holds � Unison important.
� Separations not permitted except:
  • to change hold (< 1 measure of music),
  • midline step sequence or permitted stop(s),
  • perform brief movements in character with the Charleston (if rhythm chosen)
  • at beginning or end, < 10 seconds.

� No pull or push partner by boot and/or leg (may aid by holding foot and/or leg in lift(s), or spin).
� No restrictions on dance holds, arm movements, handclaps, etc., except: brief hand-in-hand positions permitted to express the character of the Charleston rhythm is permitted (if chosen).
 

� Unison important and all changes of position with varied dance holds.
� Emphasis on more difficult holds e.g. face to face harder than hand in hand.
  • no pulling or pushing partner only by boots and/or legs
  • separations permitted but 5 secs maximum
  • separations at beginning/end max 10 secs
  • no standing, sitting or leaning on, or holding partners boots and/or legs (unless 1 skate on ice).
Lifts � 2 different types of dance lifts, but no more which are appropriate to the chosen music

� One (1) not to exceed 5 seconds (stationary, straight line, curve or rotational) and one (1) not to exceed 10 seconds (serpentine, reverse rotational, or combination)
 

 

There are no specified lifts this season, but lifts should be aesthetically pleasing to the viewer or deductions will be taken by the Judges (e.g. undignified lifts)

Senior: 5 different types of lifts
� Two (2) may be of a duration of up to 10 seconds (serpentine, reverse rotational, or combination)

Junior: 3 different types of lifts.
� One (1) may be of a duration of up to 10 seconds (serpentine, reverse rotational, or combination)

Note: Combined spins and lifts are permitted but are counted as separate elements.
 

General Restrictions on Lifts Re: Original Dance and Free Dance
basic free dance rules apply:
� lifting hand(s) not above head
� not acrobatic - Swinging the partner around by hand(s) and/or leg(s) and/or skates only; lying, sitting on the partner�s head; sitting or standing on the partner�s shoulder, back or boot; standing on the partner�s leg
� should be performed in an elegant manner without obvious feats of strength and awkward and/or undignified actions and poses
� except as noted, lifts must not exceed 5 seconds in duration
 
Spin(s) 1 Dance Spin (spin or spin combination), but not more.
- Minimum 3 revolutions on one foot by each partner after which change of foot, position and/or further revolutions optional.
- Any dance hold/position.
Note: Combined Spins and Lifts are not permitted.
Senior: Two (2) different types of Dance Spins, but not more (Spin and Spin Combination)

Junior: One (1) dance spin (Spin or Combination Spin).

Note: Combined spins and lifts are permitted but are counted as separate elements.
 

Spin Definitions Re: Original Dance and Free Dance
Spin: both partners must complete at least 3 rotations on one foot.
Combination Spin: Both partners must complete at least 3 rotations on one foot, followed by a change of foot for both simultaneously and 3 further rotations on the other foot and no more than � rotation on 2 feet during �change of feet�. A change of centre of rotation is not permitted.
 
Step
Sequences
2 Different Step Sequences
� No lifts, spins, stops or pattern regressions permitted.
� Small jumps (not more than � rotation), hops and toe steps are permitted
� Give credit for intricate footwork & edges for both.

1. Diagonal
� As fully corner to corner as possible.
� Partners must maintain Waltz/Tango and/or Foxtrot position only throughout.
� Separations are not permitted.

2. Midline
� Along long axis as nearly full length as possible.
� Difficult mirror and/or matching footwork.
� Two sequencial twizzles -2 twizzles on one foot for both skaters skated simultaneously with up to one step in between, no stop(s) are allowed before and/or between twizzles.
� Must not touch, must remain as close together as possible and not more than 2 arms length apart.

2 step sequences (Sr. & Jr.)

1. In waltz, Tango, and/or Foxtrot Hold only selected from (not hand-in-hand or kilian):
� 1 circular full width (direction optional, on short axis)
OR
� 1 Serpentine - full width � using three bold curves (beginning and ending at long axis at opposite ends of the rink)

AND

2. In Varied Hold (not hand-in-hand with extended arms) selected from:
� 1 midline - along long axis from barrier to barrier
In varied holds.
OR
- 1 diagonal - as fully corner to corner as possible

Steps: Must incorporate difficult steps and turns for both partners (i.e. including mohawks, choctaws, rockers, counters and other steps). Twizzles are allowed but not counted as the required elements.
Note: no lifts, jumps, dance spins, stops, pirouettes, pattern retrogression and loops during either step sequence.
 

Synchronized
Twizzles
- In straight line step sequence.

Senior: 2 different sets of Synchronized Twizzles
Junior: 1 set of Synchronized Twizzles
Series:
� Can enter on FO, FI, BI or BO edge.
� 2 twizzles each, max 3 small steps between, simultaneous with same number of rotations (min 1) by both in matching or mirror. More twizzles can be included but shall not be counted.
� Must travel across the ice during the turns.
� No stops are permitted before the first of second twizzles.

Note if there are more than 3 steps between: considered to be omission
A variety of entry edge and direction of rotation will contribute to the variety of the program.
