The Timmins Therapeutic Riding Association

The Timmins Therapeutic Riding Association was incorporated in 1987. It's home is Rainbow Stables, owned and operated by Lydia Dubanow. The TTRA team consists of a certified therapeutic riding coach who is also an Equine Canada certified coach and includes 31 volunteers, and 1 summer student.

They offer a fully rounded equine instruction course to all ranges of disabilities and health problems. Clients learn how to handle and groom, saddle or harness, play mounted games, do mounted exercises, riding and driving skills, take trail rides or drives, remove saddle or harness, and return horses to pasture.

Editors Note:

The Timmins Therapeutic Riding Association is currently trying to raise funds for a cover-all to allow them not only to offer their services to more people but to offer these unique benefits to the community year round.

People with disabilities often find our northern winters to be times of great frustration and, too often, depression.

Large snow banks, difficult to navigate steps and walkways, and other ice covered surfaces can make our winters treacherous. And that's for those of us without disabilities!

When I consider winter sports I think of ice skating, hockey, and skiing, none of which can be participated in by many with disabilities or health problems.

An indoor riding space would provide an outlet for cabin fever, fight off depression, and provide ongoing and regular physical activity.

Lydia says "Benefits to year-long therapy include treatment and illness prevention, increased physical fitness (lowering medical costs for clients), progress will be steady and information will be retained (eliminating frustration and creating self-confidence), provides winter activity that does not require legs/mobility/balance, as the typical winter activities do."
